about

Makindu's debut album presents the transcendental visions of tabla player Randeep Bilkhu and clarinet player Tim Wall, as they navigate a cross-cultural journey together from Australia, to India, Europe and the UK. Inspired by Randeep's re-immersion in her Sikh heritage, and Tim's discovery of this musical and spiritual tradition, the album captures a special moment in time that crystallised in the studio of Wahever Records in London. Joined by dear friends Matteo Boyero, Shreya Rai, Alice Phelps and Robyn Hemmings, and drawing on influences from Alice Coltrane to Nepali folk music, together they embark on far-ranging explorations of worlds both inner and outer.

Makindu is a town in Kenya, established in the early 1900s during the building of the Ugandan Railway. It is said that here in the evenings, under a tree, Indian railway workers of all different religious backgrounds would gather together to sing hymns of worship. On this site was built a Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) which to this day is visited by people of all Kenya's diverse communities.

Makindu are inspired by these stories as they traverse cultures and traditions, sitting down with friends and musicians across the globe, to celebrate the shared source of music and culture.
